"On
Christmas Day
Hugh
of Payns
and eight other knights among them
Godfrey of St-Omer, Archambaud of Saint-Aignan, Payen of
Montbidier, and a knight called Rossal or possibly Roland
took vows of poverty, chastity and obedience before the
Patriarch in the Holy Sepulchre." They took the name "The
Poor Fellow-Soldiers of Christ".
Baldwin II gave them quarters in Jerusalem in the Stable
of the al-Aqsa Mosque, thought to be the location of the
Temple of Solomon
and they became known as the "The Poor Fellow-Soldiers of
Jesus Christ and the Temple of Solomon", "Knights of the
Temple of Solomon", "The Knights of the Temple", "The
Templars" or the "Temple".

A
Bothwell-Gosse in the "Knights Templar" points out that
there are few reliable ancient representations, but the
Eight Pointed Cross is probably older as the Cross than
the Cross with the square ends, and must have existed
before the Templar Cipher. He concludes that it was used
before 1250 AD.
(4) Herbert Norris in "Medieval
Costume and Fashion" notes that the Templar knights wore
the red Eight Pointed Cross on the left shoulder of
their white mantles, the sergeants wore black mantles
and the squires brown mantles.

investigation of the anti-Templar charges and ordered
the arrest of Templars in every country.
His arrest warrant is sent to England,
Germany, Italy, Spain, Belgium and the Netherlands
(7) but not to the
excommunicated King Robert
the Bruce, and so some Templars are thought to have
found refuge in Scotland. |

By the Papal Bull "Ad Providam" all
assets of the Order were given to the Order of the
Hospital of St John of Jerusalem (Order of Malta) except
for Spain and Portugal.

In Scotland
the Order combined with the Hospitallers and continued

Preceptor of the Order converted to Protestantism, the

The Order
was still Masonic
under a charter from the Duke of Kent dated 19th June, 1811 in Scotland
and was
inaugurated as the
"Grand Conclave of Knights of the Holy Temple and Sepulcher, and
of St. John of Jerusalem, H.R.D.M.X K.D.SH".
(20)
Deuchar Charters subsequently issued were not Masonic,
as they authorised Encampments to install Knights Templar and
Knights of St John of Jerusalem, on the one condition that that
such Encampments should not hold any communion or intercourse
with any Chapter or Encampment, or body assuming that name,
holding meetings of Knights Templar, under a Master Mason's
Charter. (22)

|
